Product Description

Engineers and scientists are facing unpresedented opportunities, risks, and uncertainties in the global economy. This comprehensive manual makes clear the essential business knowledge required by technical professionals in the global economy: a global economic environment characterized by knowledge, convergence of technologies, and free markets. When you think of the movers and shakers in the new economy, corporate CEOs, government policy makers, venture capitalists, bankers, or technologists may come to mind. However, the choice of becoming one of the movers and shakers in the new economy is yours to make. If there is just one book you should read to understand the keys to success in a business enterprise or, as this book title suggests, a perpetual business machine, this is the one.

Perpetual Business Machines addresses three fundamental problems faced by corporations and technical professionals:

  • If business is sponsoring technology, who is preparing technical professionals for business?
  • If technical professionals are expendable, who can assure career continuation?
  • If business is a multi-dimensional universe, how do we remove the invisible wall dividing professionals?

Perpetual Business Machines is a blueprint for technical professionals working in the global economy. Assimilating decades of his own learning about business concepts and management tools, Eric T-S. Pan blends theories and practices to capture the essence of what business enterprises are all about. Using scientific analogies for basic business concepts, Mr. Pan derives a unique model of business enterprise consisted of five key components and a practical paradigm of wealth creation to help technical professionals become perpetual creators of value throughout their careers.

This is a book of learning, inspiration, and action that you will use to assess situations and make decisions time and time again.

Who Might Benefit From This Book

Engineers, scientists, managers, and entrepreneurs would gain a comprehensive knowledge about the business of technology relevant to their work, career plans, and businesses. For those entering into the workforce, this book provides guides to compare companies and products and principles to make a positive contribution to your company's success. For managers, this book offers tools and insight to improve your leadership skills and team results. For entrepreneurs, this book presents checklists and tips to help validate your ideas and pave your way to a realistic quest for venture capital.

Reviews

"One resource I could have used as a young engineer was a handbook: something to help my engineering mind grasp the business issues to be addresses to succeed. Well-written and researched, Perpetual Business Machines serves that purpose, presenting the challenges for technical professionals in the world of business. In fact, the publication of this book comes at a critical point in time given the remarkable array of opportunities available for technology leaders in these early years of a new century."
From the Foreword by Stanley T. Myers, President and CEO, SEMI

"Mr. Pan's book has identified an issue that frequently limits the success of technologist-run businesses: namely, technically trained people often do not expend the same effort learning business principles as they do on their technical training. This book is a good place for a technologist, and even some business operators to begin to fill the educational gap. The book provides an excellent overview of the fundamental principles that underlie all successful businesses. The reader is encouraged to practice applying these principles to real-world situations via the questions provided at the end of each chapter. I recommend this book to any technologist who is considering starting a business or who aspires to a management position with significant business responsibility."
Chuck Krumm, Ph.D., CEO, CK Consulting Group, Inc.

"The book is very interesting to read; explanations of fundamental business principles culminate in a paradigm of wealth creation and professionalism relevant to the success of technical professionals. The pentagon paradigm is simple to remember yet effective to inspire improvement and innovation. It should offer fresh perspectives for the running of high-tech businesses. Perpetual Business Machines is a must-read guidebook for aspiring engineers and managers to channel their efforts into true value creation."
Chuen-Der Lien, Ph.D., CTO and Vice President Process and Circuit Design, Integrated Device Technology, Inc.

"High value for engineers and technicians in the world of business who want to learn the basics of the 'business machine' that affects them directly. Perpetual Business Machines is an excellent introductory guide for starting your own business."
Art Lowe, Ph.D., former Director of Operations, Skyworks Solutions, Inc.

"Perpetual Business Machines is a business manual written especially for technical professionals striving to operate in the new economy: a global economic environment marked by knowledge, convergence of technologies, and free markets. Written by the president of Meridian Deployment Corporation in Silicon Valley, Perpetual Business Machines channels the author's personal experience in the high-tech industry during all phases of business cycles. Chapters address the key principles of profit-making, market analysis, product management, business procedure, troubleshooting, and more. Presenting its ideas enumerated point-by-point, Perpetual Business Machines is a "must-have" for anyone in the technology industry looking to strengthen their understanding of how business works and what common errors to avoid in collaborations and other ventures."

Perpetual Business Machines Provides Knowledge and Understanding of the Technology Business

"As a technical professional who has migrated into management and consulting, I have sensed over time a burden developing deep within me regarding the current professional development environment for technical personnel. Many gaps exist in the current knowledge and training. Many of you either don't have time to reorganize and assimilate the information you receive, don't care about the learning because you don't see how it affects your jobs, or can't put what you learn into practice because of cultural barriers in your companies.

I must admit that it was challenging at first to home in on the words to describe my burden. But now the burden is released. I wrote this book to integrate and align disparate pockets of learning to help you, the professionals in technology businesses, see the whole picture and, consequently, comprehend how things work together. Some of you may find content in the book useful for developing new product and venture ideas. Some might discover pointers that are applicable to current situations. Some could conceivably leave the book with a list of things to work on. Whatever the case, I hope you have gained some fresh perspectives and renewed strengths from Perpetual Business Machines – Principles of Success for Technical Professionals!"

Our Readers Comment:

"I did have a chance to read many parts of the book on my trip. It is an impressive achievement. I note the ambitiousness of the book - it attempts to cover every dimension of business and entrepreneurial theory in a concise form. I think this makes it rather appropriate for an engineer who wants to be a manager, and who needs a quick introduction to a wide range of terms and ideas - the book is a good "crash course" in business concepts. As it evolves, I think it would benefit from deeper concentration on a smaller number of concepts, with more complete anecdotes and examples to "ground" it in reality even more. The organization was quite clear and the illustrations of concepts and models were excellent."
- C.R., Ph.D., Santa Clara, CA

"I just received your book and read through it with interest. I see that you are very skilled at systematizing your knowledge and capturing your ideas in succinct diagrams and charts... A technique which should appeal to your technical professional market. Silicon Valley is full of semiconductor-related technical professionals seeking to expand their knowledge of business basics, and your book will provide a unique and useful insight for many I am sure."
- M.B., Ph.D., M.B.A., Morro Bay, CA

"After I read your statement on 'burden' at the end of the book, I think people can begin to understand and appreciate why you want to share your knowledge as discussed in the book with others after you went through the transition from a technical position to a corporate manager position, which then requires in-depth business concept in order to perform the job well and reach business goals. I think most recent managers in business, who went through the same learning curve on business, would agree with me that this is a well written book covering many key information regarding business viewed, analyzed, and discussed from many angles. My background in technical and business positions helps me to pick the concepts very quickly. This book, in my view, could be used as business 1-2-3 for corporate people and entrepreneurs in training sessions."
- W.T., Ph.D., W. Chester, PA

"I've looked at the book and read several chapters - it certainly captures a lot of my experiences working to help businesses understand technology and vice versa. I'd be interested in discussing a course."
- H.G., NYU, NY

"You have written an excellent book!"
- P.W., Ph.D., San Jose, CA

"I am studying your book and very impressed. There are a lot of things I can learn from it."
- M.L., Cupertino, CA

"Our students usually do not know much about the business world as they leave school.
This book was designed to help such students with the business side of the business.  It would be a fine text for a graduate course intended for recent engineering graduates who do not have a background in business."
- T.H., Ph.D., SCU, CA

"I got a chance to read your book. think it is a very good book and will be beneficial to a lot of people."
- V.Y., San Jose, CA

"I just finished reading your 'Perpetual Business Machines,' I learned a lot."
- E.C., Mason, OH

"The FMEA procedure in the appendix is clear and useful. I implement it into our quality system."
- J.H., Tainan, Taiwan

Quotable Quotes:

"What a company knows is as important as what it owns, and what the company does with what it knows determines its competitiveness. Wealth creation is about process: it's about what your company owns and knows, and about the core processes of converting the assets and knowledge into new products and services efficiently and quickly. Two out of the three of these key components of wealth creation are people- or employee-related. The same can be said about building your career: never forget that your job is more about people than it is about things."
- Harry T. Roman, senior member of IEEE
